Student Job Creation Program

It devastates me each summer when I have to turn away hundreds of kids who come to Bubble Swim School looking for a job, and I am equally devastated when I hear on the news about children drowning.

A solution has been designed by actually combining both of these problems:

By creating 500 jobs for Las Vegas high school &college students for the summer of 2012 by having them give our Free Water Safety / Survival / Swim Lessons to private homes, apartment & community pools

 OUR GOALS

Our goal is to train 500 area youth so that they can reach out to the thousands of public & private pools in the valley to - as a job -  share with families our Water Safety Lesson as a summer job.

Our goal also is to have real value for those that sponsor this program.

There is also the strong possibility these free lessons will - in many cases - turn into swim lesson jobs thereby extending these student's employment. The training will also allow them to be qualified for other teaching and lifeguarding jobs, such as at resorts, casinos, and the municipal and county community pools.

Training

The necessary training needed will be Lifeguarding, Water Safety Instructor (WSI), and our own Bubble course in Water Safety, Survival, and Swimming.

Training will also be given to the students to represent the sponsors in how they wish to be presented.  (For example, before each Water Safety Lesson, the student will check the pool's temperature and chemical balance - and instruct the pool owner in the proper use of a sponsor's products to remendy any problems that might be present.

Training must begin by December, 2011 due to the limited number of instructors and facilities to train 500 students for the program.  Many students will need scholarships for the training due to the huge increases that have occured in Lifeguard and WSI training costs (for example, the Red Cross has quadrupled the fees for their Lifeguard Certification card in July 2011).

Media / Exposure

All TV, Radio, Print and Social media will be contacted to request exposure of the program to reach the entire Southern Nevada population.   Posters will also be placed in establishments where a high traffic population of those with children and pools occurs.  Media exposure is critical, for it is important the corporate world be aware of this program for financial support, the public is aware so they can request the lessons, and that the students are aware they do have a chance for a job next summer.

Requested

Assistance is needed to cover the training for those students who can not afford a Lifeguarding or WSI (Water Safety Instructor) course, as well as help to cover the cost of paying those training these students and facility use.  An office manager will be needed to organize and manage the qualified teachers to the various pools given the service, and one month's salary for the students to give the free lessons.

I can credit two factors for having caused the development of this program:

1.)  A kind donation from the Southern Nevada Chapter of the International Code Council, which allowed us to expand our Free Water Safety / Survival / Swim Lessons to EVERY Saturday in the summer of 2011 (instead of just the first Saturday of each month) as well as allowing us to export these life saving lessons to private homes, community and apartment pools.

2.) The total disgust when reading on FOX News that a $500,000 federal stimulus program for Nevada created exactly 1.7 jobs:

We can do better that THAT, can't we???

I know we can.

Below is a list of and brief description of the organizations that have so far helped our cause....

Souther Nevada Chapter of the International Code Council

Contribution: the original $768.00 & Catalyst for this idea

1268One thing that really impressed me about the Souther Nevada Chapter of the International Code Council was that many of its members are city, county and state employees - all facing cuts in pay and some were even laid off and unemployed - yet they all pitched in their own money to do something to save toddler's lives from drowning - which they made one of their chapter's many causes.

Their kind contribution allowed Bubble Swim School to run our Free Water / Safety / Survival / Swim Program every Saturday during the summer of 2011, and not just once a month.  We also used part of these funds to EXPORT these live saving lessons to private, community and apartment pools.

And it were these developments that created the catalyst for this idea as a project!

Bubble Swim School

Contribution: $35,640.00

BubbleGirlBubble will donate the cost of pool use in both the Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and Lifeguarding courses which are part of the training cost for 500 instructors.  Since these students will be representing Bubble, we will also cover the cost of our Bubble training (which all of our instructors must complete) in addition to WSI & Lifeguarding.

The pool time donated will be 54 hours during last two weeks in December, 2011, then 27 hours each weekend starting January 6th, 2012, from 3:00 pm - 9:00 pm on Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm on Saturday (CPR), 8:00 am - 5:00 pm on Sunday, and 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm on Monday until May 28th, 2012.

This will be a total of 594 hours of pool time donated.

 Bill's Aquatic Service

Contribution: $6,000.00

Photo_Bill_BighamBill's Aquatic Service will offer 10 scholarships for those students who can not afford the cost of a WSI and Lifeguarding class.

Bill's Aquatic Service began in 1990 with SCUBA instruction and added Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor training while instructing at UNLV and for the YMCA.  Bill began his training while serving overseas in the United States Marine Corps as an instructor in SCUBA and Water Safety.   He retired after 24 years of service and continued his love for aquatics training here in Las Vegas.

  U.S. Federal Government

Contribution : Catalyst for this idea

capitolcloseWe have to give credit where credit is due.  $500,000 to create 1.7 jobs for Nevada?

The outrage over this fact led to the idea that we must do something - we must be the ones to create jobs.

So let's do it.  Let's give our youth some jobs this summer.  Community service programs have been cut, playing fields have been closed, and worst yet, the youth of Southern Nevada HAVE NOT BEEN GIVEN HOPE for their future.

Let's give them some hope, and better yet, let's give them a JOB.

What will you or your organization do...?
